Various educational opportunities are provided through the base education office, located in Bldg. 2623. The University of Alaska Anchorage and Southeast campuses offer master’s degrees in public administration via live satellite; bachelor’s degrees in business administration, science technology and interdisciplinary studies; and a variety of associate degrees via traditional classroom courses. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University offers a Master of Aeronautical Science, Master of Science in Management and a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics, Technology Management, and Aviation Maintenance Management. Wayland Baptist University provides a four-option major in its Bachelor of Science in Occupational Education and an associate degree, and a Master of Arts in Management. The education office also provides information, counseling and advisement on tuition assistance, Community College of the Air Force, commissioning programs, professional military education, and CLEP/DANTES testing. Local School System

Schools at Eielson are operated and maintained by the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. They offer a complete program covering kindergarten through 12th grade. Altogether, the district has approximately 16,948 students enrolled in 42 schools.

All students living on Eielson attend on-base schools. Kindergarten through 2nd grade students attend Anderson Elementary School, and 3rd through 6th grade students attend Crawford Elementary School. Junior and senior high students attend Ben Eielson Junior/Senior High School. Approximately 1,015 elementary and 633 secondary students attend these on-base schools. Students living off base attend the public school in their attendance area. Bus transportation is provided for all children within the attendance area who live at least 1 1/2 miles from school. If a military family decides to live off base in North Pole or Fairbanks, parents may request their children attend an on-base school. Permission may be granted provided classroom space is available and parents provide transportation.

Kindergarten children can attend school if they are 5 years old before Aug. 15, and first grade if they are 6 before Aug. 15, or attended a kindergarten in a public school in another state and was of legal age in that state. Alaska State law requires proof of immunization before any student is admitted into public school. Students entering kindergarten or first grade must provide a copy of their birth certificate or other proof of age.

Schools at Eielson, North Pole, Fort Wainwright and Fairbanks are all public schools. Laws, rules and regulations of the State of Alaska and the school district govern the schools in our area. Thus, policies pertaining to public schools are the same for each school in the district.

Programs and services are also similar from school to school. Extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, such as athletics, band, orchestra, etc., are provided within budget limitations. Senior high students are offered college preparatory courses, as well as vocational-technical education classes. Special education is provided for exceptional children, as well as for children with learning disabilities, physical handicaps and other special needs. The teacher or principal can help identify the specific kind of help that will benefit each student.

The school board sets policies and budgets during monthly meetings at the school district administrative center, 520 Fifth Ave., Fairbanks. Eielson has a representative on the school board; in addition, most schools have parent-teacher associations that welcome parent input and involvement.
