Local Sports

Dogsledding is not as common as it used to be, but it's still around. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is run yearly from Anchorage to Nome. The route does not come near Fairbanks, but is a draw from around Alaska and the world.

Ice hockey is popular, and local leagues can be found.

World Eskimo Indian Olympics, for people at least 1/16th Eskimo, Native American Indian, and/or Aleut.

The 2014 Arctic Winter Games will be held in Fairbanks.

Spectator sports in Anchorage tend to be indoor, but there are exceptions. There are no major league teams in Alaska, but there are several minor league teams, including some in Fairbanks. Local teams include the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks baseball team; the Fairbanks Ice Dogs ice hockey team; Fairbanks Rollergirls, Midnight Sun Rollergirlz, and the North Pole Babes in Toyland.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks, are the UA Fairbanks athletics men and women's programs, including basketball, cross-country running, skiing, a men's ice hockey team, a multiple championship co-ed rifle team, and women's swimming and volleyball.

Baseball is popular in warm weather, and there are public park fields and leagues around the area.

The Midnight Sun Game is an annual baseball game hosted by the Goldpanners of Fairbanks on the summer solstice, starting at about 10:30 in the evening and continuing into the early hours of the next morning. Despite the hours, no artificial lighting is needed; the sun only dips below the horizon for an hour or so, leaving enough twilight to play by.

Hunting: Alaska has great hunting! The Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulates big and small game in Alaska. Big game includes bison, black bear, grizzly bear, caribou, dall sheep, deer, elk, moose, mountain goat, and muskox. Regulations on small game and waterfowl are relatively light, but check the ADFG website carefully - some areas have tighter restrictions than others. The ADFG website also has notes on military licensing issues (mainly when residency applies). Trapping in Alaska includes marten, wolf, lynx, wolverine, beaver, fox, mink, red fox, otter, coyote, ermine/weasel, and muskrat.

Fishing: Alaska is a huge state, with many fishing areas. Freshwater fishing near Eielson includes arctic grayling, burbot, coho and king salmon, lake and rainbow trout, northern pike, and shellfish.
