Attractions and Events

World Ice Art Championships: This annual Fairbanks event is Alaska's contribution to temporary art. Competitors from around the world carve ice on the spot, at the George Horner Ice Park, in single block and multi-block groups and realistic and abstract categories. There is also an open group for amateurs and non-competitors.

Tanana Valley State Fair: Alaska is too large for just one state fair. This early August event covers the Interior (the other fair is near Anchorage) and features amusement rides, dances, hayrides, a speech and drama festival, vendors, livestock shows, live music and performances.

The Fairbanks Golden Days Parade is a local festival celebrating the settlement period of the area, with a Wild-West, Gold-Miner theme.

The City of North Pole: This city is actually about 1700 miles south of the north pole, and about 10 miles north of Eielson (the closest city to base), but it is a Christmas-y place, complete with candy cane light poles, Santa Claus Lane and similar other street names, green-and-white police cars, and red-and-white fire engines. There is a Santa Claus House and in full winter an ice park with sculptures, and the local Hotel North Pole. This is also the coldest regularly populated place in Alaska, with a confirmed all time low of -71 F.

Big Dipper Ice Arena: An indoor ice rink for fun skating and hockey. Birthday party reservations are available.

The Mary Siah Recreation Center: This indoor pool is available year round on summer/winter schedules. It is heated to 85 degrees, and a spa and sauna are also available. The center also has a weight room, conference room, and art room.

North Pole's Wescott Pool is 82 degrees, has six lanes, and features a waterslide and dropslide. Swimming lessons are available.
